Abstract:

Various mechanisms of electron photon interactions and their applications are first discussed and spontaneous radiation, coherent radiation and stimulated radiation are explained in general terms. The undulator radiation, which plays an important role in the third generation synchrotron radiation facilities and free electron lasers(FEL),is elaborated. A brief history of the developments of FEL is included to serve the purpose of illustrating the course of development and innovation in science and technology.A simplified version of FEL theory is presented to explain the two main domains of operation of FEL: i.e.,the small signal mode and the self amplified spontaneous emission mode. The technical requirements for the implementation of these two modes of operation are discussed and connection between FEL and linear electron position collider is mentioned. The latest situation of the world developments of FEL is given and an Infra red FEL that is in operation and a DUV FEL that is in the R D stage in China are presented as a concrete example of FEL facilities. A comparative appraisal of the different areas of applications of the conventional laser, the synchrotron radiation and FEL is given for reference.
