Abstract: Theeffectoforaladministrationofvanadium(V)onbloodglucosewasexaminedinthemaleandfemale KKmicewithgeneticnoninsulindependentdiabetesmellitus(NIDDM).Themajordifferencesbetweenmalesand femaleswereobservedintheirsensitivitytohighconcentrationofvanadium(100mg?L)throughdrinkingwater.Theresultsobtainedfrommalemiceshowedthatwaterintake,bloodglucoseandhemoglobinA1c(HbA1c)levels,triglyceride(TG),highdensitylipoproteincholesterol(HDLc),andtotalcholesterol(TCHO)weresignificantlydecreasedwithoutanyeffectonbodyweight.Furthermore,theplasma1,5anhydroglucitol(1,5AG)concentrationandglucosetoleranceweresignificantlyincreasedandimprovedafter100mg?Lofvanadiumtreatment.Inaddition,vanadiumhadnoeffectonplasmaglutamicpyruvictransaminase(GPT)andglutamicoxaloacetatetransaminase(GOT)activities,andbloodureanitrogen(BUN)levelsascomparedwiththecontrols.Theseresultssuggestthat therearesignificantsexdifferencesinsensitivitytovanadiumwithaglucoseloweringdoseinmaleandfemaleKKmouse.Theglucoseloweringeffectsweremoremarkedinmalesthaninfemales.
